アメリカの近現代詩を研究しています。いくつか詩人の名前を挙げれば、Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Ezra Pound, George Oppen, Robert Duncan, Lyn Hejinian, Michael Palmer など。カリフォルニア詩や日本の現代詩にも深い関心があります。これらの研究対象や分野のあいだでどんな交流が成立するかという点についても探りたいと考えています。
専門は「現代イギリス地域研究」で，ディシプリン横断的なアプローチをめざしています。最近の大学院担当科目では，近年注目を集めているミドルブラウ研究を扱っています。個人的な関心は，戦間期に刊行された新聞上の連載小説の社会的役割について。また，文学や作家を現代史や思想史というコンテクストにおいて再考したり，文学（作品）と文化理論との関連を考察しています。
My research comes within the fields of second language acquisition and second/foreign language education. In particular, I am interested in the psychology of foreign language learning. This is a growing field of study, which investigates questions of why some individuals learn languages at a different pace and to a different level to others. Research in this area looks at a range of individual characteristics, such as personality, aptitude, beliefs and considers how these can shape approaches to learning a foreign language. It is a highly practical field, attracting considerable attention and interest from experienced teachers who are looking to develop a better understanding of their own classrooms and teaching. Other current research projects include an investigation of the role of the arts in language education, a study of lifelong language learners, and research into the applications of Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and English as Medium of Instruction (EMI) within the Japanese educational context.
専門領域は，いわゆる＜アメリカン・ルネッサンス＞と呼ばれることもある，19世紀中葉のアメリカ文学です。過去の研究歴から言えば，中心となるのはHerman Melville とRalph Waldo Emersonで，同時代に全く対照的とも言える世界観を提示したこの二人の書き手，その両極を往き来する点に，研究者としての私の特徴があります。Nathaniel Hawthorne や，Emily Dickinson についても論文を書いています。この時代の文学に限らず、20世紀のアメリカ文学や文化にも強い関心があります。
My research interests include language rights, language policy, bilingualism and bilingual education and critical multicultural approaches to education. I have published several books and over 25 articles and chapters in these areas. My seminar examines English language issues at societal and global levels. It discusses the historical context of the global development of English, status of English as a first and second language, and issues involving English that are currently developing in and across diverse societies. My seminar will help students to understand the educational systems, successes, and problems of different countries. It also shows how education creates inequalities in society. One global issue is the policy prescription that guides the delivery of education in school systems in developing nations.
16，17世紀のイギリス演劇，特にWilliam Shakespeareを中心とするエリザベス朝演劇を研究しています。時代と舞台への考察を常に行いながら深く劇作品のテキストを読み，世界でも例を見ない演劇の黄金期を，今現在を生きる者の視点と感性で深く掘り下げてゆくことをモッ卜―としています。演劇博物館COEでの成果も生かして，新たなシェイクスピア批評を開拓するとともに，大学院生の論文・発表の支援を精一杯してゆきたいと思っています。
